Classes of biomolecules
1. carbohydrates (ex:lactose) << monosaccharieds
2. lipids <<(very diverse)
3. proteins << amino acids
4. nucleic acids << nucleotides
Biomolecule framework
1. carbon skeletons
(1) Carbon skeletons vary in length.
(2) Skeletons may be unranched or branched.
(3) Skeletons may have double bonds, which can vary in location.
(4) Skeletons may be arranged in rings.
(5) Carbon skeletons themselves are not polarized.
2. functional groups
(1) Functional groups have electronegativity. Electronegativity creates chemical reactions. If carbohydrates have functional groups, they can form chemical reactions easily.
"Small defferences lead to big effects!"
Alcohols -OH ethanol=!methanol
Why? >> Chemical reations defend on 3D shape: location of activity is important.
Biomolecules are made from building blocks.

monomers>>polymer/macromolecules(by dehydration reaction)
*Each class has its own set of monomers.
Polymers also can convert into monomers by hydrolysis.
Monosaccharides : monomer of carbohydrates
(1) simple form : CH2O // General form of monosaccharides : pontoses, hexoses
(2) functional groups : hydroxyl -OH / carbonyl -C=O
(3) isomer : aldose and ketose
(4) monosaccharide>disaccharide>oligosaccharide
Disaccharides
(1) maltose=glucose+glucose
(2) sucrose=glucose+fructose
(3) lactose=glucose+galactose
Lactose intolerance
(1) All milk contains lactose and babies produce lactase: there is gradual decrease in enzyme production.
Lipids
(1) Lipids are hydrophobic.
(2) glycerides>fats
(3) fatty acids, glycerol, ...
Protein
(1) Proteins have a R group, a amino group(like base) and a carboxyl group(like acid).
(2) There are 20 kinds of R groups.
(3) There are 4 protien structure.
Nucleic acids
(1) Nucleic acids have a phosphate group, a sugar and a nitrogenous base.
(2) There are 4 types of nucleic acids.
